Sambal Shiok Laksa bar review
Mandy Yin Sambal Shiok has been a sought-out restaurant for foodies. She started her journey selling chicken satays and beef rendang at London lunch markets in 2013. With the further success of her pop-ups, she finally has settled on a permanent spot in Holloway Road with her own Laksa bar.
Restaurant and location
Opening 5 days a week from Tuesday to Friday. The exterior is painted navy and red, the large windows allow you to peep into the interior and other diners. On a visit on the weekend in the early evening, the restaurant was quite empty with a few other guests. A table was easy to get, and staff quickly handed over a menu. There’s enough seating for big groups, couples and solo diners.
Sambal Shoik menu
Sambal Shoik Laksa bar invites you to sit inside for comforting heart-warming laksa and other Malaysian dishes. The menu is short, with five laksa choices, sharing snacks, rice bowls, and noodles.
All of the laksas are labelled with 3 chillies’ but don’t worry it’s not numbing. You can also go milder.
The special laksa
Ordering the special laksa for £16.50, the base of the soup uses campur-based paste, a cross between curry and fiery Assam laksa. The bowl arrived promptly, chunks of poached chicken breasts and peeled prawns. The colour of deep sunset, vegetables are hidden underneath the meat and a portion of noodles. The soup is thick and creamy, thanks to the coconut milk.
