No1 chip shop on Tripadvisor Golden Chippy
With over 2k glowing reviews on Google and TripAdvisor, you can see why Golden Chippy fish and chips shop is loved by locals and anyone who visits. Does it live up to the hype?
The Golden Chippy is in South East London, right near the heart of Greenwich. The owner Chris Kanizi came to England when he was just 17 years old. He started the business from scratch, originally being a human surgeon to fish.
Visiting in the early evening, the tiny restaurant was already packed with punters with their meals. A table freed up later, the friendly staff presented the menu.
Being a traditional chippy, the menu is short. Besides fish and seafood, you can find café classics, in the form of burgers, chicken, jacket potato, pies, sausages, and sides.
I opted for my usual plaice fish and mushy peas on the side, the meal includes chips and salad. Which sets you back at £17 plus £2.00 for the mushy peas. Everything ordered is cooked by the order, with a 10–15-minute wait.
The plate arrived full to the brim of fish, chips, side salad and mushy peas. Taste test. The battered fish is delicate and light. The secret is in the batter, cooked at the right temperature, and left to drain for 1-2 minutes before being served to the customers.
The fish is smooth like lava and melts immediately in the mouth, you can taste the sea from the freshness of that fish. The chips are equally satisfying, neatly cut with thickness at all sides the proper chip shop kind. The exterior is crispy, whilst the inside is light and fluffy. There’s no oil after taste which is plus. The side salad is deliciously coated in a homemade dressing.
