Poon’s wontoneria pop up at No 23 Charlotte Street Carousel’s
One day I had this real urge to hunt down a bowl of great wontons, just like the ones eaten in Hong Kong. Research brought me to the attention of the Poon’s. No stranger to the London food scene Bill and Cecilia Poon first created Wind Dried Sausages in the 70s. Proceeding to open five restaurants in London with the Covent Garden location even awarded a Michelin Star.
With the Poon’s parents retiring in 2006, their daughter Amy decides to revive the business, operating pop-ups and producing the Poon’s signature sauces.
Poon’s Wontoneria pop up location
Poon’s Wontoneria pop-up is currently running until October, residing at Carousel’s side hustle at No 23 Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia. The menu as the name suggests is about the wontons. You have four different wontons to pick, from classic pork, chicken, prawn or vegetables.
On the menu
You can order 8 pieces on their own for £15, or a wonton noodle bowl with 5 pieces for £15. Small plates of pickled vegetables and seasonal greens can be ordered on the side.
Every order is cooked by the chef by the bar, and you can witness them boiling pans of water and plating them up before being served to you.
I opted for the prawn wontons, marinated minced prawns with bamboo shoots. The 8 pieces are neatly plated, drizzled in Poon’s signature chilli vinegar sauce along with green spring onions. The silky, slipping parcels are packed with flavour, and demolished within minutes.
The Hong Kong milk tea served is from another London small business Cha Dong, which can be found in Chinatown, supermarkets and other pop-ups.
