Dim Sum Duck Kings Cross
Queuing hours for dim sum, you think I’m mad. Well, I was, it was a Saturday in the summer when my friend and I decided to try Dim Sum Duck. It’s well known in the food community, and notorious for the very long queues. Was it worth it? Of course, it was, the owner came out offering glasses of water and umbrellas from the blazing heat. Arriving in the Kings Cross area before opening hours, we were at the end of an already massive queue.
The two-hour queue
Dim Sum and Duck only have 20 seats, we waited patiently until our turn. Whilst in the queue we grabbed a menu and knew our order.
Dim sum is a traditional Chinese cuisine that is typically served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. It is often enjoyed as a brunch or lunch dish and is typically accompanied by tea.
The taste test
The dim sum experience can vary greatly depending on the restaurant you choose, but a good dim sum restaurant will have a wide variety of options available, including steamed dumplings, fried wontons, rice noodle rolls, and sweet desserts.
In this particular review, the dim sum was described as outstanding. The prawn dumplings were particularly noteworthy, with a delicate wrapper and flavourful filling. The fried wontons were also praised for their crispy texture and savoury filling. The rice noodle rolls were delicate and had a nice chewiness, and were filled with plumped shrimp. Hands down all the prawn dishes were spectacular and one of the best in London. Pork dishes were a let-down, lacking depth of flavour beyond salt. Soy-flavoured noodles absorbed the wok hei flavour. Won ton dumplings and soup is another winner, with full-bodied depth in the broth.
Most dim sum dishes hit the £5 mark, but the portions are huge compared to Chinatown.
The service was also mentioned as being very good, with friendly and attentive staff. The restaurant was clean and well-maintained.
Overall, this dim sum experience was highly recommended. The dim sum dishes were delicious, with a variety of flavours and textures. The service was excellent, and the restaurant was clean and comfortable. It is a great option for a casual brunch or lunch and offers great value for money.
