Coctel de Marisco

There are often misconceptions with tequila, not the usual go to spirit for cocktails. My memories of licking salt off the back of my hand and down shots comes back to haunt me.

El Nivel is a brand new bar and restaurant in the hidden back streets of Covent Garden, living above La Perla. Specialising in agave spirits, cocktails and Mexican tapas with Asian influences.

The bar is very laid back with a small room, filled with original paintings; décor is latin retro with a relaxing atmosphere. The sprits are an extensive collection of tequilas and even having their own brand with labels with the fields it came from.

Sitting up on the high chair by the bar, I started the night with La Poderosa, then La Marquesa, Siesta, Herbalizer, Mezcal Fix and finally the T&T. Each one specially crafted to go with the small plates that El Nivel has. The cocktails have changed my perception on tequila cocktails. With the right flavours and notes you can barely taste the alcohol.

As I mention El Nivel has a selection of small plates with Asian fusion. With its tongue in cheek names like “Guacamole “yim fun ho” you never expect the dish to have sweet flavours like strawberries, mangoes with Chinese pancakes. I adored the Coctel de Marisco, queen scallops, tangy cocktail sauce with crunchy homemade crackers.

El Nivel is a fantastic place to check out for some quench thirsting cocktails and the small plates pairs well. I advise booking a table in advance as it’s a small place.
