There was high anticipation for Asian sensational Din Tai Fung, for many years I have read many blogs and sites about this Taiwanese restaurant. Specialising xiao long bao, that’s the soup dumpling to you and me. I couldn’t leave Hong Kong without trying these. There’s a rumour that Din Tai Fung will finally open a branch in London this year. Fingers crossed.
We visited the Miramar Shopping branch as we were in the area shopping. Located on the 4th floor with other restaurants. The restaurant felt very brand new lots of warm earthy tones and marble flooring. Bright daylight lighting is flooded throughout.
I really love how there’s a how to eat soup dumpling card instruction by the table. The menu has plenty of food to choose from, soup dumplings, appetizers, noodle, noodle soups, rice, vegetables. Since we weren’t too hungry we ordered the special soup dumplings, steamed dumplings and noodles.
XiaoLongBao comes in 6 pieces, we ordered special steamed pork dumplings, and picking one up the shape immediately falls into a sack. Grab a spoon and take a bite, watch the soup burst out into the spoon and slowly drink it. Pork is full-bodied, and soup is flavourful with a clear brown broth. The skin wrapper is the right thickness and not too hard. Once you have Din Tai Fung soup dumplings nothing else can beat them.
The skin wrapper texture is the same as the soup dumplings. Shaped into a half-moon we found vegetable and pork chopped up finely.
The noodles at Din Tai Fung is so uninformed and even, looking perfect, topped with minced pork, edamame beans, spring onions and soy-based sauce. Noodles have a firm bite to them and topping is nicely flavoured and not too heavy.
