Loewe X Howl’s Moving Castle pop up at Selfridges

The third and final Loewe x Studio Ghibli has finally arrived and there’s a pop-up in Selfridges you can’t miss. As a huge Studio Ghibli fan, it was a fantastic experience with the cloud room, corner shop and the sweet treats by Balbosté.

A collaboration with Studio Ghibli

Previously the Spanish designer Loewe made collaborations on the following Japanese Studio Ghibli films, My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away. With the Howl’s Moving Castle collab, you see pieces featuring Calcifer, Howl, Sophie, Heen and the castle.

LOEWE x Howl’s Moving Castle: The Cloud Room can be booked online via Eventbrite for free. Where you get an exclusive guided tour behind the scenes of the creative process for the collection. I was amazed to learn that the characters on the leather bags are actually leather pieces placed together using a leather marquetry technique to form the shapes and not painted them.

The Moving castle bag

The Moving castle bag uses over 200 leather pieces to construct the bag, and only 24 were produced. The Moving Castle bag is built using some of LOEWE’s iconic bags including the Hammock, Flamenco, Puzzle, Bracelet Pouch and Amazona.

The Loewe team constructed wooden mechanical blocks for their campaign adverts. The last part of the guided tour is a special mirrored room with a cloud smoke machine for photo ops.

Inside Selfridges, the Selfridges Corner Shop is decked out with props, the castle and stills from the film. There are six collectable posters to be found in the store.

The usual Dolly’s Cafe has been transformed into Calcifer’s Kitchen where you can book afternoon tea, Prince Justin’s Aperitivo, or Sophie’s breakfast, created by the French studio Balbosté. The afternoon looked fun; I purchased a few Calcifer shape macarons filled with chocolate passion fruit to take away.
