The extremely hard-to-book Sushi Tetsu

It took 8 years to come here. Sushi Tetsu is one of the most challenging and exclusive places to book. When my Apple watch started to flash with Sushi Tetsu ringing. I ran at lightning speed to grab my phone, initially missing the first call. I dialled back to hear Harumi’s gentle softspoken voice on the phone. “We have a seat available for this Friday, would you like to take it?” Of course, I took it.  

Popularity and how to book a table at Sushi Tetsu

Sushi Tetsu’s popularity blew up in 2013 after a writer wrote an article. Back in the day, the booking system was a gruelling experience of waiting on the first and third Monday of the month by calling their telephone number. The tiny Japanese restaurant only seats 7 people, nowadays you can book online on Monday at 12:00 PM sharp. Run by the husband-and-wife duo. The small 7-seater restaurant in an alleyway by Clerkenwell is an intimate experience.  

Back in action

The evening I dined, Sushi Tetsu just reopened from a short break and with Chef Toru Takahashi maskless for the first time since the pandemic. He was all in good spirits, chatting to all the repeat guests who had clearly been to the establishment many times before.  

The opening dish wowed me from the get-go. A thin strand of yuzu stood out in the clarified clean tasting broth. Each dish is a work of art, balancing the fresh fish, seasoned rice and homemade dressing. To witness Chef Toru skilfully prepare edomae-style sashimi and sushi in an orchestrated way. Whilst Harumi delivers first-class hosting duties.  

Omakase experience and price

The phenomenal Sushi Tetsu omakase experience costs a whopping £157 pp with a three-hour service. Omakase お任せ translate to “I’ll leave it up to you”. The ingredients and dishes are determined on the day.
