Voodoo Ray’s pizza is the kind of pizzeria that you can go and pretend you got a pizza by the slice in New York. I saw them around at their Boxpark for a while. Often when I past Voodoo Ray’s pizza I see people eating their pizzas as I walk past through the window. I never seem to fancy pizza at the time, but somehow today I had the urge to try it out.
The shop sign has bright neon red that stands out from day to night, with some benches outside. Inside the table, the counter has the pizzas on display, and menu etched on the top. For some reason, Voodoo Ray’s calls their pizza pies. They baked their pizzas by 22” at a time.
I picked the one that most appealed to me and had most ingredients. The one with meatballs were calling my name. Now the slices are massive at Voodoo Ray’s two together will make up an 11” pizza. Every pizza by the slice other than the regular size only cost £4.
Once you order you are given a ticket, the pizzas are already pre-cooked but get reheated in an oven. When my pizza was ready I took it over to the seating area and tucked in. Upon taking the first bite, I knew this is one of best pizzas I ever had. It’s not like the others out there; the base is unique and unforgettable. The crust is thin and dough is fluffy but that base is very crispy and firm. I learned that Voodoo Ray’s baked their pizza at a lower temperature and add polenta for that extra crunch. Of course, the ingredients are top notch, my meatballs turned out to be minced up sausages with fennel and chilli, along with marinated tomatoes that splattered as I took bites, caramelised onions, mozzarella on a tomato sauce base.
