LiveABC smart pen with Illustrated Hong Kong Cantonese book bundle
As someone who loves to travel, and immerse in other cultures and languages. I thought I buy a product that helps me refresh my Cantonese, and learn other languages such as Mandarin, Japanese and Korean. This bundle comes with the LiveABC smart pen and Illustrated Hong Kong Cantonese book.
Learn 5 languages
After some research, I found this bundle on Mumbl website, a LiveABC smart pen and Illustrated Hong Kong Cantonese book. Not only does it have Cantonese, but you can also learn an additional 4, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and English.
If you’re a long-time reader of this site, you would know I have travelled to Hong Kong and Korea already. I’ve been fortunate to learn Chinese/Cantonese when I was younger, conversing with my family and attending Chinese school every Saturday.
Thanks to Korean TV shows, and K-pop I’ve picked up some basic words in Korean.
Inside the bundle
In the bundle, you receive the Illustrated Hong Kong Cantonese book with over 2,000 words and phrases to learn. The LiveABC smart pen includes a 16GB micro-SD card, and a cable to transfer the eBooks data to the memory card. Unfortunately, the instructions are all in Chinese, it was straightforward for me to add the files to the micro-SD card. You need to download the audio files from the SOW publisher’s website and simply open up the BOOK folder and drag and drop the files. The metal that holds the micro-SD card is a little flimsy and came off straight away. You also need 2x AAA batteries (not included) to operate the pen.
Illustrated Hong Kong Cantonese
This is the ideal book for travelling around Hong Kong, living there, learning the phrases of eating traditional street food, chaa teng tang, shopping and more. There is pinyin above the Chinese text to help with pronunciations, however, you need to know how to read Japanese and Koren to remember the phrases.
How to use the pen and book
To activate the audio for the book you tap the pen on the LiveABC pen icon on the top right cover. If you don’t have a LiveABC smart pen you can scan the QR on the front cover that takes you to the SOW publishing site to play audio files.
Using the pen tip on the words and the pen playbacks the audio in the 5 different languages. The book is divided into 5 sections, basic, living in Hong Kong, shopping in Hong Kong, eating in Hong Kong, having fun in Hong Kong.
Recording and playback
One of the great features of the book and smart pen is the recording and playback function. You can record your voice and compare it to the narrator to check pronunciation.
Illustrated Hong Kong Cantonese ebook kindle version
If you are thinking of buying the eBook/Kindle version on Amazon, just note the LiveABC smart does not work on this version. As mentioned you can scan the QR code on the front cover for access to the MP3 audio files online.
Overall
I think this is a good interactive way to learn new languages and once you pick up a few words you start remembering the new phrases. The bundle is a good price at £115, as I’ve paid £49.99 for the Pleco dictionary app.
Demo
I’ve created a short demo video on youtube.
