E. Pellicci
Old school cafes are rare to come by with the ever-increasing rents rocketing every year in London. Cafes find it hard to stay in business and I’ve seen many close down selling their business to another franchise. I am so glad that E. Pellicci has stayed in business. Rumour has it that famous Kray brothers use to frequent this East End café in Bethnal Green back in the days.
East London Cafe
The grade ii listed building pretty much has the vintage art deco look intact. I visited on a weekday morning and the tiny café was filled up but the owner a very friendly man squeezed me in on a table with other guys. E. Pellicci serves up breakfast, sandwiches and Italian food.
The menu
I ordered up my full English and a cup of tea and was fully entertained by the staff of E. Pellicci. Plenty of the cockney charm the family-run café had me in stitches, with Nevio junior bringing out mistletoe making a couple kiss underneath it. When people came in for a takeout that lady added humour by repeating it back calling the order a “boring bastards salad sandwich”. Bells ringing, cups tapped on teased their 70-year staff for finding a real job.
The Full English Breakfast
The full English breakfast will set you for £7 a price increase from the website advertised, still worth every penny in my opinion. The food finally came and was well generous, and not greasy at all since the food is grilled instead of fried. Plumped sausages, bacon, perfectly grilled mushrooms and tomatoes with a soft-cooked egg on a fried slice of toast. By all means, everything was very tasty with quality produce use. My only complaint is that the tea was tiny for 70p; I was expecting a mug, not a small cup.
I can see why people love this place for breakfast, the old art deco charm and the lovely warm welcoming from this cockney family run business.
