There are quite a few ‘egg’ named restaurants I’ve written about. Egg Break in Notting Hill, The Bag egg in Moorgate and now The Good Egg. What started out as a pop up in Stoke Newington than marking a permanent spot. A second location in Carnaby Street has opened. The Good Egg offers flavours of the middle east celebrating the Tel Aviv street food. Open from morning to evening serving brunch and dinner.
Taking over Cha Cha Moon old site, there’s plenty of seats for the 100 covers. Sit outside for some fresh air admire Kingly Court or go indoors the décor is nothing too fancy.
I had a photography shoot to attend in the morning and made a trip to Carnaby street just to get breakfast. At the time I visited the menu from their site was an old menu. I really wanted to try Jerusalem breakfast, but it is only available for bigger parties. Seated outside, the service was a little slow to receive a menu.
Sticking to a favourite classic, Shakshuka and the extra merguez sausage and crispy halloumi were added as extras.
Arriving in a cast iron pot, tomato sauce is seen still bubbling in the surface, famous baked eggs are perfectly cooked, dollops of preserved lemon sour yoghurt took up a third of the pot. Merguez sausage is long and skinny, strong pepper spices can be tasted and the beef is sure meaty. Crispy halloumi looked like deep-fried tofu, ginger bread brown and cubed. Brickhouse sourdough triumph even when dipped in the tomato sauce, it stayed crispy light and did not become soggy. The combination of the sour yoghurt and rich tomato sauce became creamy.
Next time I visit the Good Egg I would love to explore the pitas, challah and bagels from the menu. I hear the babka are also a must try.
